Almost everyone knows what ceramic is. What many of us do not know is the many ways that ceramic is used. Most of us think of pots, porcelains, and tiles when we encounter the word “ceramic.” But there is more to ceramic than those things. Because of its toughness, durability, and other favorable characteristics, ceramic is used nowadays in several high-tech industries, such as automotive and aerospace.
In the automotive industry, ceramics are used in auto parts such as pistons and disc brakes. Ceramic is used to either coat the part or to create the part itself. These auto parts are constantly subjected to stressful circumstances and extremely high levels of temperature in which metal cannot survive. To make a metal piston more resilient, ceramic is used to coat it. In the case of disc brakes, they are made solely with ceramics. Ceramic disc brakes are especially necessary in high-powered vehicles. That is because the more power an engine has, the higher the level of friction that a disc brake undergoes. High levels of friction can easily break a metal disc brake. An accident will surely happen if a vehicle’s disc brake is damaged.
The aerospace industry also takes advantage of the toughness of ceramics by using ceramics to coat metal turbine blades. The extremely high levels of speed that turbine blades spin can damage the metal blades. And so, the metal turbine blades are coated with ceramic so they will not break or become deformed while spinning. Turbine blades are not cheap. Therefore, replacing them constantly due to breakage would cost airline companies a lot of money.
